In my neck of the woods, ticks are a real concern. Over the last five years my family and I have tested and evaluated various products. Out of all of those tested, these are what we recommend to friends and family and are currently using ourselves. The following are ordered by my personal preference, based on effectiveness and health concerns.

  •  Yard Treatment
    • Tick Killz Concentrate Insecticide — Prior to using this product, our dog and kids were coming inside with multiple ticks when ever they went outside during the summer months. Since we started using the following, we’ve had far fewer ticks.I believe this product has made the biggest impact towards reducing the ticks we find.
  • Topical 
  •  Pre-treated Clothing
    • Insect Shield – Insect Shield sells clothing branded under their own name for use around the home. They also treat clothing sold by other brand names such as ExOfficio + Realtree. You can also send your own clothing to them for treatment. The Insect Shield branded clothing that I have used and recommend to others includes:
  • Clothing Treatment
    • We have used two different brands of permethrin and have not noticed a discernible difference in their effectiveness. I treat a couple of sets of clothing for yard work and a set or two for hiking every six weeks or so. Please read and follow the instructions carefully; permethrin can be harmful to humans and cats before it dries. We tend to purchase whatever is on sale:
