It seems like a lifetime ago. I can’t even remember the names of everyone in the pictures.  😳

Looking back on some of these trips on which we were so unprepared, I shudder to think what could have happened… I guess we had youth and luck on our sides. We wanted to do this trip as a 2-3 day backpack, but didn’t get permits. We decided to do it as a day hike instead, with no training other than going for 1 or 2 short runs (less than 5 miles) in the weeks leading up to the trip.

Do you ever look back on your old trips with relief that nothing went wrong or maybe even some embarrassment regarding how naïve you were or how you handled things?

I hiked this solo in March 2005 (small world). I was so convinced that I couldn’t get a campsite that I drove up from Phoenix early in the morning, did the entire hike (same as you) and drove back to Phoenix that night. The was fine for me since I was in pretty good shape but I am very lucky I didn’t fall asleep driving. That was stupid.
