Question:
Have any of you needed to repair Kahtoola Microspikes, Hillsound Trail Crampons or a similar product while you’ve been out on the trail? What’s the most effective way to repair them? Is it worthwhile to carry a backup set if you have them available to you?
I am in the process of putting together a repair kit to carry on my winter hikes. Having a traction device fail mid-hike with no way to repair it could create a very dangerous situation. I have a few ideas regarding what may work, but some first hand experience would be very helpful. So far, my kit includes:
- zip ties
- wire
- small length of paracord
Things that I carry in my emergency kit, that may be useful for this purpose:
- pliers (Leatherman multi-tool)
- Kevlar survival cord/rope
Maintaining and inspecting your traction devices regularly is an important step towards ensuring you’re not stranded out on the trail. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s maintenance and storage recommendations and to check your gear before each hike.
